Solution background
Customer Challenge

Butterfly industries is using VDI to access SAP for 100+ users who are more of franchise clients and branch managers. They had deployed a Sophos firewall and provided client VPN access to end users to connect to their SAP workload in their on-premises data center. The users from different locations were connected to main office through virtual private gateway to access SAP and mail. User profiles and policies had to be in place to restrict or provide access to users. Butterfly wanted to upgrade their current VDI and setup a Disaster recovery solution in the cloud. All this while backups were being taken manually.

  • On-boarding of new employees took at least two days as new client machines had to be bought.
  • Monitoring the usage pattern of the end users was a big challenge.
  • Flexibility for the end users to work at any time was not provided.
  • Updating Product details took time in datacentre machines which in turn, affected other branches too.
  • Periodic hardware refresh was needed which was a recurring cost.
  • Active directory was running in an out-of-support Windows server.
  • Accidental deletion of backup data has occurred in the past as it was a manual process.

Quadra’s Solution on AWS

We upgraded Butterfly’s VDI solution to virtual desktops through which franchise clients and branch managers can now access the organization data securely - get the latest product details as soon as they are updated and also update order and inventory details quickly.

AWS provides a low cost, scalable, and highly reliable infrastructure platform to businesses who are looking to manage variable costs and replace high upfront infrastructure investments. AWS was selected not only due to its high global availability and its infrastructural presence in the APAC region, but also because of its development platform that provides a host of services that help bring products to market quickly, reliably, and securely.

Amazon Workspaces enables provisioning of virtual, cloud-based Microsoft Windows, Amazon Linux, or Ubuntu Linux desktops for your users, known as Workspaces. Workspaces eliminates the need to procure and deploy hardware or install complex software. One can quickly add or remove users as needs change. Users can access their virtual desktops from multiple devices or web browsers. The Amazon Workspaces provides the right virtual workspace for varied worker types, especially hybrid and remote workers. It improves IT agility and maximizes user experience, while enterprises only pay for the infrastructure that they use. It accelerates the journey to the cloud with a consistent management and end-user experience across hybrid VDI deployments.

Technical Solution

We created the Amazon virtual private cloud in AWS with public and private subnets in different availability zones. NAT gateway was created in public subnet and attached with private subnet to connect to internet whereas public subnet was attached with internet gateway to open internet. Amazon EC2 instance was launched for domain controller. AWS Managed Microsoft AD was created and integrated with Amazon EC2 instance. User IDs were created in the AD. Applications were configured as custom bundles in Amazon workspace. They were then launched with the appropriate bundle in different availability zones. This significantly reduced the manpower to individually install application for each workspace.

Customer Benefits

  • Amazon workspace gives remote employees and other users fast but restricted access to resources; we achieved 99.9% availability in AWS.
  • Butterfly now on-boards new employees in minutes instead of days with the centralize management and quick provisioning of desktops.
  • We reduced demand on IT support by enabling self-service capabilities, in turn reducing 80% of manpower in IT support.
  • We increased end users experience with enhanced performance and anywhere, anytime and any network-based access.
  • We strengthened security by storing user data on AWS instead of on vulnerable endpoint devices.
  • Amazon Workspace upgradation can be done in minutes instead of days it took to upgrade end-user machines.
  • We enabled scale on demand with fixed-rate pricing, no overprovisioning, and no upfront costs unlike on-premises datacentres.
  • Depreciation costs were eliminated.
  • Remote worker productivity has increased by 50% with high-performance, globally distributed infrastructure.
